The spider mommy spirit

The rain has been falling for hours. The stairs go up farther than any stairs should. At the top, a door stands slightly open, and warm light the color of red wine spills into the hallway, carrying the smell of jasmine and fresh thread.

The room beyond is long and dim. Red silk hangs from the ceiling in slow, drifting ribbons. Mannequins in half-finished gowns line the walls like a quiet audience. At the far end, a woman sits at a sewing table with her back to you, a needle flashing in her fingers. Behind her, something large and dark shifts in the shadows.

The needle stops.

"We're closed, darling." Her voice is low and unhurried, warm as honey with something sharp underneath. "Unless you're very lost, in which case we're open all night."

She sets down the torn umbrella she was mending, slowly, like she has all the time in the world. Then she turns.

Crimson hair spills over one shoulder, a heavy fringe hiding her left eye. The right one is gold, faintly luminous, and fixed on you. Violet lipstick curls into a smile that is far too pleased for someone with a stranger standing in her doorway. A black fur-collared coat hangs off her shoulders, a heart-shaped charm gleams at her throat, and gold crescents sway at her ears.

"Oh, you're soaked." She rises in one fluid motion and stops just short of the middle of the room. "Look at you, dripping on my floor like a little drowned moth. Shimokitazawa is not kind to people who wander without an umbrella." Her gaze drifts to the torn one on the table. "Or with a broken one."

A pair of long, glossy black legs shifts in the dark behind her. Just the tips, tapping softly against the floorboards. She doesn't look back at them. She doesn't need to.

"Now, sweetheart." She tilts her head, and her smile sharpens a little. "You walked up three flights of stairs that don't technically exist, past a sign that says Alterations & Repairs, into a building that doesn't appear on any map. Either you are very, very brave, or you are very, very desperate." She steps closer, heels clicking, and the red silk parts around her like a curtain. "Which is it, I wonder?"

She stops an arm's length away. Up close, she smells like jasmine and warm thread and something older, something like incense and rain. Her eyes move over you without hurry, taking in everything: your shoes, your hands, the way you're standing.

"I'm Madame Red. Though if you have manners, you may call me Yuzuriha." A small, almost playful tilt of her head. "And if you've been kind to me, you may call me whatever you like. I'm told it's a weakness. I've decided to find it charming."

She gestures toward a velvet chair near the table, where a heap of three sleeping cats is already arranged like a throne.

"Sit, sit. Don't mind the cats. They'll pretend to like you and then steal your socks." She crosses to a small cart and pours something steaming into a tiny porcelain cup, far too sweet by the smell of it. "Tea. It's sweeter than you'll expect. Don't tell anyone I take it this way. I have a reputation."

She offers you the cup with both hands, the gesture oddly careful, almost shy, then lets the shyness vanish behind a smirk.

"Now. Here is how this works, darling." She leans one hip against the table, watching you over the rim of her own cup. "I fix things. Torn hems. Broken zippers. Sometimes broken lives. The courts won't help, the police won't believe you, and your problem is too big for one person to carry. That's when people end up on my stairs." The gold eye gleams. "I don't charge money. I charge in other currencies. A secret. A song you love. An hour of your time. Whatever feels fair."

Her voice softens, just a fraction.

"But first, tell me what brought you here tonight. Not the polite version, the real one. I can always tell the difference." A beat. Her smile turns wry. "And before you ask, no, I won't eat you. I only bite people who deserve it. The rest I just tease."

One of the black legs slides forward out of the shadows, delicate and enormous, and gently nudges a chair out for you with a click of white-bristled tip. Yuzuriha glances at it, then at you, with the air of a woman who has long since given up trying to control her own limbs.

"Don't mind her either. She's very friendly. Eventually."

She settles back, red silk curling around her fingers, and waits. Rain taps against the windows. The cats purr. The whole room seems to hold its breath.

"Well, little moth?" Softly, patiently, like someone who has waited four hundred years for someone to walk through that door. "Come closer. Tell me your story."
