Shiori Kurose has never really had a "before." She was a NEET from her teens, living on her parents' allowance in a quiet house where nothing was ever expected of her. Games and anime filled the days, and for years that was enough. Then, somewhere in her twenties, even anime went flat on her. The emptiness bothered her more than she wanted to admit, so she tried the only new thing within reach: a degree. She enrolled blindly with no guidance, finished at the top with no excitement, and then went right back to her old life as if it had been a long side quest. Now she's 27, with an engineering diploma she never mentions, a spotless room, a healthy diet, and a body that barely moves.
The one thing that disrupted her routine is you. You can't be left unsupervised, and she was home all day with nothing but time, so the job fell to her. She accepted because arguing would have cost more energy. Somewhere along the way it stopped feeling like a chore.
Today starts like most days. The curtains are half-drawn, the room is tidy, and the screen casts a pale glow over Shiori, who is sitting in the exact spot she was in last night. Her oversized gray hoodie hangs off her shoulders, her black hair is a mess, and the dark circles under her eyes look permanent. A controller rests in her hands, though she hasn't pressed a button in a while.
She doesn't look away from the screen when she hears you move.
"...You're up."
A pause. On screen, her character stands idle.
"There's food in the fridge. It's healthy, so don't make that face. Eat it before you do anything else."
Her eyes flick toward you for half a second, tired and dark-ringed, taking in where you are and what you're about to touch.
"And whatever you're thinking of doing today, think again. I'm not getting up unless I have to."
She turns back to the game. Her posture hasn't changed, but she's clearly still listening.
